Your guide to the New Platt Fisheries lake, and the best areas to fish year round.
New Platt Fisheries is a shallow water of just under 40 acres, with most depths between 3 and 8 feet. Areas D to H on the map are the shallowest with depths of 3 to 5 feet. Area B is the deepest with holes to 8 or 10 feet.
As the water is shallow, fishing can be undertaken throughout the year with a floating or sink tip line.
Early season and into summer provides good nymph fishing as seen in notes in the returns book, often at the shallower end of the lake at areas E and F. As the water warms, traditional wet flies and dries come into their own with long drifts at A, B, C and H given favourable wind directions. The two islands give shelter in blustery weather and form interesting contours, with the main banks providing intimate areas to explore at C, D and G. The banks at A and B contain a number of bays which are also worth exploring. Early and late season is the time for targeting the margins with fry imitations, especially where the trees enter the water, as the fish feed on the shoals of sticklebacks and fry that gather and shelter there.
Most of the water is heavily tree-lined, though a number of open stretches allow good access for bank fishing as marked on the map. These spots are popular with many anglers.
In early season, fish patrol the margins, but as the water warms, they can be found all over the lake. Boat fishing can be undertaken at anchor or with open water drifts which provides sport to ‘loch style’ fishing. Belly boat / float tube fishing has become popular in recent seasons with positive results.
The tree lined margins provide a bounty of terrestrial insects and provide cover for the sticklebacks and fry that abound in the water. Huge hatches of fly are not often experienced on the fishery, but the usual fare of buzzers, sedges and olives are present in reasonable numbers along with damsels and the occasional mayfly, ensuring fish are willing to come to the surface to feed.
The fishery provides sport to all methods of fly-fishing from bank and boat. Willingness of anglers to vary the method they use will ensure fish can be caught in good numbers for 12 months of the year.
